Dennis Ryan recognized by Alumni Council
Each May brings the end to the term of one of the three councilors representing the Club Officer's association and this year sees us bid farewell to Dennis Ryan. Dennis has served both the COA and the Council tirelessly and in great manner for many years, and his contributions have made both organizations much stronger - usually without any heraldry or fanfare. We owe Dennis many thanks and offer him sincere good wishes for the future.

Alumni Council resolution thanking Martha Hartfiel:
“Be it resolved that the Dartmouth Alumni Council extends its deep appreciation to Martha Hartfiel '83 for her thoughtful and energetic leadership as the 2008-2009 chair of the Nominating and Alumni Trustee Search Committee. Although there were no trustee elections this year, Martha did not rest for a moment. Instead, she guided the committee through a year of research and thought, actively soliciting nominations for the Alumni Liaison Committee, at-large Alumni Council members, and future trustee candidates. With her keen intelligence and engaging personality, she encouraged creative thinking, as the committee worked to identify and recruit alumni volunteer leaders. Martha’s great sense of humor and wit caused many people to wonder why so much laughter could be heard behind those Nominating Committee doors. We understand the great sacrifice of time and energy that your job as chair required, and we appreciate not only the sacrifice, but the enthusiasm, willingness, and constant good humor with which you made it.”

2008 Large Club of the Year
The Dartmouth Club of the Midwest was named Large Club of the Year by the Executive Committee of the Club Officers Association.

"It takes between 800 and 2000 alumni in your region to put you in the "Large" category. This club has 1,139. Twenty board members met three times during the year to plan twelve events. The executive committee was particularly impressed with the breadth of events and programs they support.

They have consistently fielded a deep and strong leadership team. One reason why might be, as their report states, that they choose their officers based not only on interest, but on their "exhibited capabilities". What a novel concept, don’t just give the job to the first person to raise their hand! They then find creative ways to keep their former presidents on board rather than let them drift too far away.

This club also takes great pride in its student recruitment efforts. They interviewed 180 applicants last year, delivered Dartmouth t-shirts to the newly admitted students (a club tradition they pioneered), and they raised $12,600 to add to their club scholarship fund which supports 14 scholars, more than any other Dartmouth club!

They do it all and they do it well, year in and year out. Congratulations to the Dartmouth Club of the Midwest for its selection as 2008 Large Club of the Year!"
