MEETING WITH NELS ARMSTRONG '71
Nelson (Nels) Armstrong '71 is Director of Alumni Relations at Dartmouth
College, with overall responsibility for alumni relations and alumni programs,
including alumni clubs, alumni classes, alumni continuing education, and
alumni communications.
Nels began his directorship in January of 1995, following a four-year
tenure at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland as director of university
alumni affairs. Prior to that, Nels had worked at Dartmouth as a student
counselor, and as an associate director in Dartmouth's Alumni Fund Office,
and held positions in financial aid, student employment, admissions, and
the alumni fund at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A 1971 graduate
of Dartmouth, Nels majored in music and participated in student theater.
We have arranged for a private dining room at the Club 21, 2920 N. Oracle
Road at the Junction of Miracle Mile and Oracle Road. If you can get there
by 6:30 PM that would be good, but if you have to come late that would
be OK also. The Club 21 has food and drink suggestions that start at $2.75
for a green corn tamale and go to $11.95 for Fajitas (Steak, Chicken, Shrimp
or Veggie). They have non-Mexican food also on the menu.
The Club 21 management says that you are welcome to come to the meeting
even if you do not order anything to eat or drink. You are also welcome
whether or not you have paid your dues to the Dartmouth Alumni Club of
Tucson.
Call Ben Lawwill '52 at 520-219-3712 if you will be at the Club 21 on
February 11, 1999.
DARTMOUTH DAY AT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
The Dartmouth Club has reserved Saturday, February 20th, to work on-site
at Habitat for Humanity. Habitat builds community by building homes.
Habitat does not ask us to be first- or even third-rate carpenters,
stonemasons, and electricians. What Habitat wants is willing learners for
one day's effort at community building. They have job bosses who'll teach
us how to use toots if we need teaching, and who'll guide us as we help
them build a house.
It's especially important, if you're eager to work, not to feel intimidated
because you're not used to handling tools or you're not physically strong
(but you should be physically fit). The work is easy to learn and much
of it does not require significant physical strength.
There are only places for 10 people. There are 9 places left.
If you're interested in a day's physical activity putting something
back into the community, please call Peter Goldman at work (622-7733) or
at home (327-0901). He'll get you the necessary paperwork.
CRY FOR HELP
We are very anxious to hear from you why so many alumni are not attending
the alumni functions. There are about 175 alumni in the southern Arizona
area. We only had 28 people at the Christmas party and at least half or
those were spouses or children of alumni. What are we doing wrong? Please
tell us what we need to do in order for you to attend the alumni functions.
We also are anxious to receive suggestions for speakers or for special
events.
