10/20/97 When I left Tuck in 1977, I started with the Administrative Services consulting practice of Arthur Andersen & Co (Now Andersen Consulting) in the Boston office. After a couple of years there, I left to go to Washington DC and worked as a consultant with Strategic Planning Associates, one of the "boutique" strategy firms so popular at the time (in the vein of BCG and Bain but without the preponderance of Harvard grads). There we prepared weighty and, in our minds, significant strategic insights for CEO's of major Fortune 500 companies. We used lots of "bubble" charts and thought all complex problems could be reduced to a few key two-dimensional matrices (growth vs. market share, profitability vs. share, market/book value vs ROE/Cost of Equity). An opportunity arose to join Marriott financial planing department in 1981 and to work with Gary Wilson, John Dasburg and others who went on to shape Disney and Northwest Airlines. I held various financial positions in Marriott and have been with them for over 16 years. I am currently the VP of Finance for the Health Care Services Division, the largest in the industry with $1.8bil in volume. I have an outstanding staff and enjoy working with the team. I look forward to many more exciting opportunities with the company. I again appreciate your efforts in bringing this new medium to bear in alumni communications.
