Thanks to Gregg Serenbetz

Lynn Rainville is entering her second year at the University of Michigan where she's getting her Ph.D. in Middle Eastern archaeology. As part of her research she spent the past summer at a dig in Turkey. From Lynn I hear that Susan Chimonas is entering her 3rd year in a sociology Ph.D. program, Steve Bonz is heading to Taiwan to work after earning his black belt in Aiki Jitsu in May and John Eburne is starting a Ph.D. program at the University of Pennsylvania this fall.

Julia Hammer finished her second year at the University of Oregon where she's getting a Ph.D. in volcanology. Julia hopes to go to Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines this fall.

After completing a stint with Teach for America, Rob Mascola is at Stanford getting a Masters in Mathematics. Rob wanted me to reassure everyone that he's still pursuing an acting career. After being turned down for a role as a lap dancer in "Showgirls," he's set his sights on landing a guest spot on "My So Called Life." We wish you luck, Rob.

Kiersten Muenchinger is also at Stanford, but as far as I know is not looking for any guest spots on "My So- Called Life." She worked for a Product Development firm in Chicago before heading there this fall to major in New Product Design.

Amy Stericker is taking pre-requisites for a Physical Therapy Masters Degree while working in a VA Hospital's Physical Therapy Department and a Microbrewery - a "fun restaurant" she writes. She lives near the ocean with three roommates and a dog named Sophie. Her green card was postmarked from Long Beach, CA so I'm assuming that's where she lives. (The beach part fits).

Tina Rosenblum is at Cornell getting a Ph.D. in developmental Psychology. She spends her time researching intelligence (her focus is on cognitive development), consulting for the World Bank, camping, hiking, playing tennis and golf, biking 100+ miles around Lake Cayuga, and generally enjoying all of the natural wonders "the area has to offer."

Stephanie Rupp headed off to Africa at the end of June to do research in rain forest conversation in Cameroon as a Fulbright Scholar. In addition to Cameroon, Stephanie will also spend several months in Zaire, working on a project she started in 1994.

After teaching in Indonesia at a University for a year and a half, Roz Emmett has moved back to the US. to begin a Masters program in Education at Columbia University.

Preeti Sinha started Yale's School of Management this fall, after spending the previous two years working at Lehman Brothers in New York.

Brad Simanek has kept himself busy since graduation. He earned an M.B.A., concentration in finance and marketing, with honors from the University of Chicago last spring. After business school he joined a consulting actuarial firm doing interest rate and market analysis and cash flow forecasting for insurance companies and is now starting a business called 'Rezume' which creates resumes, go figure, for students and recent graduates. Peter Deininger graduated with Brad and is working for the Swiss Bank in Chicago. In addition, Brad reports that Jim Keating is working for U.S. Robotics in Chicago, and that Marc Steifman will be attending the U. of C. M.B.A. program this fall.

After getting his Bachelor of Engineering degree from the Thayer School last year, David Krause spent 5 months in Florida as a pilot before heading to Brazil for 5 months to do volunteer work at an orphanage in Brazil. He's now "working on joining the corporate world and would appreciate any help!"

'93s who are pursuing more active careers in athletics include Sue Stuebner, who is the coach of the women's basketball team at Albright College in Reading, PA. She also works in the admissions office. Sue and Renee Reed, who is a coach at Rutgers, continue to root for the Big Green at hoops games across the East. They ran into John Eliot at the University of Virginia. Corinna Knight, she writes, is working hard on a Masters of Art History at the University of Delaware.

Chris Grover did not say anything about himself but managed to give me a lot of information about other '93s. "Adam Heaney spent the winter in Asarna, Sweden training for x-c skiing and learning Swedish. This spring he was third in the "Survival of the Fittest" contest. He also graces the cover of May's issue of SKI magazine. Fellow x-c skiers Carl Swenson and Nina Kemppel (both '92s that graduated in '93, and both members of the U.S. Ski Team) also spent the fall training in Sweden. Kemppel is the national champ this year in the 15 km classic race while Swenson is the national champ in the 15 km freestyle race. Max Rabinowitz spent the winter snowboarding in Juneau, AK and will be attending U. of Washington Med. School this fall. Pete Althausen will enter Tufts Med. School this fall." Thanks for all of the info, Chris.

And all-time Ultimate Frisbee great Chris Onken was in Sante Fe, New Mexico this past summer through Middleburg / Breadloaf. Apparently he organized an Alumni ultimate frisbee team to compete in the Open Regionals but missed competing in it do to an "extraterrestrial experience worthy of an 'X-Files' episode." He sends his apologies to disc goddesses Beth Delehaunty and Amy Hannah who spent 5 hours broken down in Lee, MA before finally making it to the tournament in Albany.

Now, on to the less green pastures of New York City. Or maybe more green depending on how you look at it. Suzanne Moody is working as an Assistant Account Executive at Ammirati and Puris/Lintas Advertising Agency in New York.

Carl McGowan works for Anderson Consulting in the Metropolitan New York area. He writes that he spends his spare time hanging out in Manhattan where he ran into Jeff Baines, Elsa Meharry, and Gary Campbell at a benefit for the Alvin Ailey Dance Troupe.

Luke McGinnis does not mention his own activities, but makes the correction that Matt Downer is at the Convertible Securities Capital Markets desk at First Boston and not a consultant as I had reported in the previous newsletter.

Heather Deering is still in the Capital Markets group at Goldman Sachs. Angus King, she writes, is working in the Communications Department of the White House.

Larry Cook is living and working in New York. Rumor has it that in his spare time he's working on a book entitled, "The Tao of Fu."

Adam Leader is working for a computer software company that "hawks" derivatives trading and processing software. He's a senior software designer which is "in practice like a researcher, writer, and programmer baby-sitter." He's thinking of grad school somewhere "less smelly than New York."

Out on the other coast, specifically Los Angeles, Beth Krakower is working at MMS USA, a record label, as Director of Radio Promotion. Other '93s residing in L.A. include G. Michael Evans and Jason Bogal who work at a place called Mac (?) as is J. Christopher Bell. Beth tells me that Jeff Middents is at the University of Michigan and Angela Lee is living in NY and working at a doctor's office.

Andy Baker works at William Morris in the New Media Department where he gets to "surf the Internet and play new CD-ROMs. He's hoping that one of the sitcoms or hour-long dramas he's been writing finds its way onto a TV show. He lives with Laurel Deck at "a beautiful place on the ocean" in Marina Del Ray. Laurel is planning to start psychology graduate school next year. Currently, she works for PR Newswire, sending information and news releases across the country.

After driving across the country with Amy Palmer '94, Alexis Templeton is now living in San Francisco where she's trying to get used to city life after Hanover and "driving w/several million *!#? every day with angry cops everywhere." On the trip out west, she and Amy spent a lot of time camping and rock-climbing in Montana and Wyoming.

Laura Thaxter works at a mediation firm in San Francisco, CA. She recently took 3 months off work for some R&R. "I spent most of the time in San Diego enjoying the sunshine and beaches (4 years in Hanover wasn't enough Laura?). Took a few road trips to Disneyland, L.A., Joshua Tree National Park, Big Bear Lake..." Laura reports that fellow '93 Natalie Wiedener lives in Arlington, VA with her fiancee and fellow George Washington Law student Michael Draeger, and that Anne Tisi left the Big Apple for the palm trees of L.A.

Before I have time to think of any corny ER type segways into the group of '93s studying medicine, I'm going to get right to it. Genevieve Noone is in medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, "and loving it," in her own words.

Pam Adelstein is starting her third year of medical school at Albany Medical College. Michael Weissman, reports Pam, is working for Owens Corning in Ohio, completing an engineering internship before attending law school this fall.

Ander Lurie started his third year of medical school at Rush Medical College in Chicago.

Steven Williams is in his second year at Yale Medical School. Outside his hectic medical school schedule (or is the work load a big myth?), Steven keeps busy as a general partner in a small company that will gross over $100K this year - a company first!

Kate Wheeler has finished her second year of medical school at Columbia. In between Boards and her third year she took a two week break to visit her roommate's home in Cypress.

John Rose spent the year slugging it out through clinical rotations and chronic sleep deprivation along with Kevin Courtney and Todd Brady at Duke University School of Medicine. Chris Mero is also at Duke as a Chemistry grad student. After two years studying in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Duke, David Harrild is also attending Duke Medical School. He "hopes to graduate with my M.D./Ph.D. some time before the turn of the millennium -- sadly, that's an ambitious goal."

Mike MacAvoy attends Stanford Medical school and adds "Chris Bahng is studying piano at the University of Texas, Austin."

Cally Gwon is in her third year at Dartmouth Medical School. And Peter Lind is a second year at Columbia Medical School.

I have several Dartmouth '93 weddings to report. Selen Unsal married Charles Knight '92 this past June and July. No, that isn't a typo, she actually had two weddings. In her own words, "since I am Turkish we are having two weddings in two continents - one in Istanbul and one in D.C." Selen has been with J.P. Morgan since graduation. Charles will be studying medicine at Columbia. Kristen Chang sent in her congratulations to the bride and groom, and confirmed the multiple weddings, but made no mention of what she's been up to.

Dana MacLaurin reported on Carolyn Riley's wedding to Pete Chapman '91. Other '93s who attended the ceremony included Janet Staab, Meredith Bryant, Terri Tarrant, Kate Wheeler and Sabrina Pagani. Carolyn is in a Ph.D. program at Harvard, Janet is working in finance in Boston, Meredith is finishing her third year at Harvard Law School, Kate is at Columbia Medical School, Terri is taking a year off from medical school to pursue a research fellowship at the National Institute for Health, and Sabrinia is taking classes in preparation for Architecture school. As for herself, Dana works for Booz Allen & Hamilton, a management consulting firm in San Francisco. She runs into Jake Nunn '92, Christy Neuman, Cathleen Millett and Chad Thomas every so often.

Serena Varley (Bucknam) married Paul Varley '94 in July of 1994. They live in Pittsburgh where Paul is attending the Information Networking Institute at CMU. Serena will be starting law school at BU this fall and reports that Pam Adelstein has finished her second year of medical school in Albany.

Irene Georgakoudi married Jim St. John '90 on June 25th, 1994 in Thessalouiki, Greece. Jackie Dufault was in attendance. Irene is a second year graduate student at the Biophysics Department of the University of Rochester and "has a lot of fun" teaching Greek folk dancing to the teenagers in the area.

Mike Fauerbach and Elizabeth Dirks '94 were married on June 23rd in Dedham, MA. Ollie Medzihradsky, Bill Gussman, Matt Downer, Taro Aikawa, Craig Josephs, and John Sargent witnessed the ceremony. Both Mike and Liz are now living in State College, PA where Mike is a first year business student and Liz is a first year geography graduate student.

Kelly Foley and Jay Stachowicz were also married on June 23rd in Indianapolis, IN. Dartmouth '93's in attendance were Jeff Allen, Rob Mascola, Scott Fisher, Adrienne Paine, Katie Roberts, Doug Johnston, Mary Beth Keiller, Hans Mallalieu, Keenya Warner, Kirsten Vinson, Gregg Serenbetz, Sean Quinn, Nandini Joseph, Denae Chryssomali, Roberta Braum, Minjoo Lee, and Jamie Russell.

And Nicole Andres reported the wedding of Sarah Carlson and Eric-Ian Zardviet on June 10th in Washington DC. Nicole had the privilege of being the Maid of Honor. Ted Brader also served in the Wedding Party as a groomsman. Other Dartmouth attendees included, Janette McMahon '92, Sofia Veniard, Natalie Veniard '96, Corinna Knight, Renˇe Kalvestrand, Bill Driscoll, Marinn Carlson, Yoi Hererra '92, Michelle Sieff '92, and Neel Doshi'94. "Friends of Sarah and Eric can find them as of July, in permanent residence in London." As for Nicole, she lives in Falls Church, VA and works for a VA-based health care consulting firm.

A number of '93s announced their engagements (or their friend's). Jennifer Ebright is planning a June 1996 wedding to John Goff in Pennsylvania. One of the "fearless group living in New York City," though not this past summer which she spent in Connecticut as a research associate, her "primary job" is at Columbia Business School where she plans to receive her M.B.A. in May 1996.

Corinne Gilchrist and Dan Maryland '90 are engaged to be married. They plan a summer of '96 wedding back on the Hanover Plain. Corinne works as an analyst with Health Advances - a health care consulting firm just outside of Boston. From Corinne I hear that John Branda will be attending Harvard Medical School for his first year this fall.

Jennifer Messina was recently engaged to Bill Sayre. Jennifer is getting her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of Virginia and Bill is a medical student at the University of Virginia. Jennifer reports that Sarah McGarry took her Board exams after her first two years of medical school and Melissa Brown returned from a year in Australia and is currently considering graduate school to get her MFA.

Doug Johnston and Adrienne Paine were engaged this past summer. They plan a March 23, 1996 wedding in New Orleans, LA. Doug is a second year medical student at Harvard and Adrienne works for the publisher Little, Brown and Company.

Cynthia Flanagan ended her green card with "who'd of thought I'd be the first bowling nun to tie the knot." I'm not quite sure what that means exactly but I'm sure some people out there do. In any case, she writes that she's engaged, "but not to a Russian." Cynthia has been in St. Petersberg for over a year and a half and is apparently suffering from disc withdrawal. She hopes to start a team with Beth Delehaunty and Amy Hannah (of disk goddess fame), who were scouted by the East German National Team while in Albany for Open Regionals.

One last engagement notice comes from Richard Khoe. He isn't engaged, at least that I know of from his card, but he reports that Rachel Yocum is planning an October '95 wedding. She was studying Philosophy at Georgetown. Richard is working at a government relations consulting firm specializing in trade and foreign investment and writes that Serena Buckman is at Boston University Law, Sam Kim is at his second year at Harvard Divinity School, and Mark Zohn finished his second year at Duke Law .

Several '93s have become parents recently. Karl Kistler is living in St. Paul, MN with his wife, Susan Colley Kistler (class of '88-'89), and their daughter Emily, born Feb. 19, 1995. Carl is pursuing a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and Susan is pursuing a Ph.D. in Education.

Jalieh Juliet Midgette (Shepard) writes "much has been happening in my life. I'm a mother to our 2 year old daughter Allegra Joie and am presently working on a compilation of stories on loss."

And Barbara Lucas Jeffress gave birth to a baby girl, Hannah Elizabeth, on March 30. She and her husband, Scott Jeffress '90, moved to Germany in August.

Congratulations Karl, Susan, Jalieh, Barbara and Scott on your new arrivals!

Drew Patrick writes "quit the desk job to produce a low-budget independent feature-length film. The money is tight but supportive family and friends are helping this first feature off the ground. Look for Sixth Man Films, Inc. at Sundance in 1996!"

Annie Edgerton finished a 10 month "touring acting gig," performed in upstate NY this summer, and studied Shakespeare at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art at the end of the summer. This fall she will be acting in New York City. She writes that she's bumped into Greg Schmolka who was at the Bitter End recovering from a wonderful adventure abroad and Scott Mitchell who, in addition to being newly married, was trying to escape from a rat infested apartment.

Laura Denison Howse had a ton of news to report. "I go by my middle name nowadays... still working part time in lithography fine art printshop. Starting my own business line of jewelry. Any buyers? Having lunch with Jeff Hashimoto before he leaves on Outward Bound trip. Saw Dan LeBlanc, alive and well in Snowmass, Chris Seldin, in Boulder, Kate Cudney, Vermont Studio School in summer. Halley Moore still in NYC. Kristy Collins my excellent roommate to be married to an excellent man in September. Direct any doubts to me and I'll squelch 'em. They're a great match. I know because I live with them." There's an excellent endorsement if I've ever seen one.

The law school crowd includes Marinn Carlson who writes that she finished her "first year of law school at Yale, where I see Mike Scodro all the time. Frighteningly enough, I actually like it!" I just have one question Marinn. Is "it" law school or seeing Mike Scodro all the time? Because, knowing Mike, I could imagine seeing him all the time might be frightening. (Sorry Mike). Anyway, Marinn spent the summer in DC working for the Environmental Defense Fund.

John Stanton completed his second year at Georgetown Law. He worked for Howery and Simon in Washington DC this past summer.

After spending the summer back home in Connecticut, Andrew Vogel jetted to the other coast to begin his third year of law school at UCLA.

Dan Weintraub spent several months traveling through Hungry, Croatia, Russia, Slovenia, and Slovakia after graduation before heading off to Boston College Law School. He's now in his second year and reports that Jeff Edwards will be attending University of Texas Law School this fall. Susy Struble writes, "although I'm still waitressing to make the proverbial ends meet, I finally found a career of sorts in Jackson. I CAN have my cake and eat it, too! I'm a publicist for several authors and have also started research for my own book, coming your way soon(er) or later. Oh yea, and I ski. A lot."

Elizabeth Kellogg, John Wolfe, and Joan Andrews also find plenty of time to ski. The three of them live in Park City , UT. When not abusing the cook at the micro-brewery/ restaurant where Beth works, she's been busy applying to medical school. John just recently joined an environmental engineering firm out there and Joan is in her second year at the University of Utah Law School.

Veree Hawkins spent the past summer living in Dallas - "home of Amazing Cowboys." She worked as an analyst for the Texas Commerce Bank before returning to business school this fall. She'll get her MBA in Finance from SMU in May '96.

And now to Washington DC, home of the less than stellar team that managed to beat the "Amazing Cowboys" twice this season. Michelle Dauphinais is living in Washington D.C. working for a contractor with the Department of Treasury. She's preparing to go to law school at Georgetown next fall and is engaged to Matthew Echols. A date has not been set.

Terri Tarrant is taking a year off between her 2nd and 3rd year of medical school at the University of Florida to work at the N.I.H. in the Howard Hughes Research Scholars Program. As reported earlier, Terri attended Carolyn Riley's wedding on July 8.

Jeff Allen works for the Rails to Trails Conservancy. He spent a month in Northern Canada this summer on a canoeing trip with several alum's. For anyone planning a visit to DC, look for Jeff at baggage claim area B of Washington's National Airport. It's one of his favorite places to hang out. Oh, and he's engaged to be married. He and his fianc¸, Beth Bailey, have not set a date for the wedding.

And finally, Rob Trenkamp is a Marketing Manager at MicroStrategy in Washington DC.

Peter Kuechle spent two years at McKinsey and Company in their Cleveland office before heading to Boston to work for Advent International this past July. He managed to go to a few Indians games - with Ari Epstein and Jon Rosenblatt '94, before leaving.

Myrna Laine works for Scudder, Stevens & Clark, a top notch investment management firm in Boston.

He writes that Josh is finishing his Masters thesis and degree in Media Arts and Sciences at MIT - "i.e., he's a virtual reality and internet world wide web guru." Mark recently left the consulting firm CSC Index and joined Advent International, a venture capital firm in Boston.

Jess Griffiths and Tim Weinrich are teaching at a small international school in Switzerland. Tim spent the past year teaching at an Environmental Education center near Middlebury.

After biking across the country with Jeff Adams and Dan Jacobs, Rich Matusow is teaching Spanish and coaching soccer and tennis at St. Andrews School in Middleton, DE. Dan is in medical school at Northwestern and Jeff is starting graduate school this fall.

Liza Veto is still in Hanover. She is the Assistant Coordinator of the Sexual Awareness and Abuse Program at Dartmouth and lives "on the river in Norwich (the blue house for crew folks)." Jenny Dahlstein, Liza writes, "is living and working in Boston at John Snow, Inc., a company that raises money and coordinates public health projects in places like Mali, Nepal, Yemen, and Morocco." Abby Ross is also in Vermont. Abby is "working at WISE in Lebanon, doing education in area middle and high schools about domestic and sexual violence, advocating for teen survivors, and providing direct service and resources for clients of all ages."

Finally, I have news from Jeremy Hinman, a '93 who transferred to Stanford but still receives mail from the Alumni office. He asked me to include this since there are many '93s he hasn't made contact with in a while. "I left Dartmouth after spending a riotous summer at PsiU, went to work in Connecticut, spent the winter of 91-92 in Vail with Kurt Rieke, Pete Kuechle, Todd Cook, and others. Spent the next six months working in Tokyo. Then went to Stanford. Majored in sailing (actual declared major - symbolic systems, a lot like CS but more esoteric). Spent the next summer in Tokyo, came back and started looking for a job. Although I wasn't too intent on working hard, got a job consulting with a software company that offered me so much $$$ I couldn't turn them down. Big mistake. Quit 3 months later to go to Alta, Utah to ski, work at the Alta Lodge. I am currently programming satellite software for a physics project designed to test Einstein's General Theory of Relativity at Stanford. I know, sounds awful, but I needed the cash. I am living in Palo Alto with Karen Cushing and Georgia Greene, but I think Georgia is about to leave to go hang out with the Shining Path in Peru. I am planning on returning to Japan in January to continue studying the language and culture and hopefully secure a sold income."
