News from Spring/Summer '98

Hi friends! A couple months ago at reunion I was part of that panel on diverse career & personal experience since graduation. I summed up my successful time traveling, walking across the country, hitchhiking and finally writing comedy for a series of You Don't Know Jack projects as having the willingness to embrace uncertainty.

Well, it's time to embrace uncertainty again! I'm leaving Chicago and Jellyvision at the end of August in search of new adventure, new challenge. First up is a September 470-mile thru-hike of the Colorado Trail from Denver to Durango with two younger Dartmouth alum friends. With a clearer head and heart, I'll then begin on my next big dream: screenwriting. Since it'll undoubtedly take time to become good, I'll meantime find a way to support myself somewhere, ideally the Bay Area or elsewhere out West, but realistically my wide search could land me anywhere (if anyone has a good idea or opportunity for me, please email, I'd love to listen, am open to anything!).

I guess that's it... I hope to hear from a few of you with your own updates when you get a chance. By the way, I'll definitely be in the LA area around the time of the inaugural Avon 3-Day Breast Cancer Walk Oct 23-25, so if anyone out that way wants to hook up, drop a line in advance.

I thought I'd send you an update since lots has changed in the last 6-9 months. I've moved from Greenwich CT to Stony Brook Long Island (NY). The move was not exactly prompted by an enormous desire to move to Long Island, but instead because the software company I had been working for, PHD, was sold to Long Island based Computer Associates International Inc. (CA)

I've joined CA as National Account Manager for the Ernst and Young relationship with our Reseller program and am having lots of fun. Its weird going from a 50 person company to an 11,000 person company virtually overnight. My introduction to the company was our first sales meeting, on a Cruise ship bound from Miami to New Orleans for Jazz Fest.

I'm also singing with a CT based Jazz group called "By Popular Demand". We are 8 people, all vocal, male and female and are having a lot of fun. We've even sung at the US Open! Pretty cool. We will have a CD coming out sometime in the fall and I'm happy to dupe tapes for anyone interested.

Other than that, I see the guys from Spontaneous Combustion, Dave Kaiser, Ted Wallace, Lew Cirne, Jeff Cobb '92 as regularly as possible since we are all over the United States. Last we were together was April for our Annual San Francisco concert tour...including Wineries of Napa, the Mystery Spot of Santa Cruise and numerous seranades of waitresses around the great state of California. Not much has changed there, that's for sure. Our roadies made the trip too: Jeff Bird '92, Ellen Reed '92, and Carl Seglem '92 were among them.

I hope everyone feels free to get in touch with me, I'm a bit bored out here in Long Island with little or no Dartmouth contact!!

I left Citibank last month and have joined a broadband telecommunications company in New York City called NTL. NTL owns CableTel in the UK and actually has a number of Dartmouth alum on top! No complaints thus far and the idea of working in a 15 person office in NYC is great. I am working in the 3 person Corporate Development group which oversees mergers and acquisitions, new markets, licensing. If any alumni know of anyone renting/subletting an apt. in New York City please let me know!

I've been living in Phoenix for over 2 years. Prior to that I was located in Chicago, living with Jim Creaser (shocker). Now I'm married, with our first kid due in October (real shocker). Currently I'm working for a telecommunications company in a management role. On the side, I'm the Managing Director and actor for Actors' Renaissance Theatre here in Phoenix. Basically I'm totally out of touch with any other alums. I lost track of Creaser and Mel Bowen after my wedding in '96 (Jim was engaged, Mel's on her way to the Dominican Republic). Unfortunately I'm not making our reunion either... I'm sooo bummed!

It gives me great pleasure to announce that I am engaged to be married to Jessica Chun (Penn '94). I proposed to her on Friday, April 17, with ring in hand, down on one knee, in Washington, DC, the city where we met (at law school). She had no idea. Since then, it's been one big whirlwind tour. After seeing some friends in DC, we went to her parents' house and then to see my family. Then, it was off to San Francisco for vacation. In SF, we stayed with Andrew Beebe who is doing really well.

In other news, David "Guppy" Hsu, Minjoo Lee and I presided over the first meeting of the Dartmouth Asian Pacific American Alumni Association (DAPAAA). Over thirty enthusiastic alumni and students attended. Starting a completely new group from the bottom-up has been exciting, and we hope to have DAPAAA fully-operational with elected officers, regional coordinators, a newsletter and a web site by the end of this year. Anyone interested in getting involved with DAPAAA should contact Dave (dwh15@columbia.edu), Minjoo (mlee@littler.com) or me (doug.chia@cliffordchance.com).
