Class of 67 Completes Great Year!

Our Great Class of 67 has just completed an outstanding year in the period July 1, 2010 to June 30 2011.  We held five well-attended mini-reunions, supported a large number of important projects, published our maximum quota of newsletters and Dartmouth Alumni Magazine columns, increased the number of dues payers and check-off contributions, grew the Treasury, began planning for the 45th and 50th Reunions and had a great time doing all of the above and more.

For complete details, check on this link (CAR) and read our complete Class Activity Report.

67' Website – New and Improving

The Great Class of ’67 website was re-launched in 2009, and we have now had the time and experience to understand what 67’s like about it, and what more they expect. The good news is that the website is reasonably well visited – an average of 20 unique hits a week, many using search terms that tell us classmates are looking for specific information about upcoming class events, and other classmates (and sometimes even their significant others).

We have had many inquiries about using the blogs, but precious few bloggers. And, in our conversations with classmates at Class and Dartmouth events, we find that everyone likes the new website, but there are strong desires for (1) updating it more frequently; (2) making it more interactive and transactional; and (3) providing links to news about the College and the Dartmouth activities we support and in which our classmates are engaged. Some of those “wants” are being addressed immediately.

Links: We have created a new section on this Home Page (just above the Class Archives) of links to major Dartmouth news sources.

Updating:  We have set up a new process for getting periodic information from our Class Officers and the members of the Executive Committee who manage our Class projects. You will start to see their updates soon, either on the Home Page or by clicking on the tabs at the top of the Home Page. You will also begin to see regular updates as we move towards the 45th Reunion and plan the 50th. Each will have their own tab at the top of the Home Page and, of course, important news will be here. We have begun posting the Class Newsletter to the website as soon as it comes off the printing press. We are looking to assigning someone to cover the campus for us, and who can post updates to the Home Page as news warrants.

Interactivity: The blogs work. They are easy to use. We password protected this section to avoid spammers. Everyone in the Class has the same password. If you need it again, e-mail Sam or Krisa and it will be sent to you immediately. We are looking at ways to put an email link into the stories, so that if you want to email a classmate mentioned in an article, all you will have to do is click and your email program will open up. We are also studying ways to put in secure transactional capabilities for payment of Class dues and Reunion fees.  The link we have just added to the Dartmouth College Fund is secure.

67' BLOGS ARE ALIVE! READ AND POST!

It’s still about us.  It's about what we love, what we like, and what we don't.  It's about what we do, what we won't do, and what we don't do anymore. It's about growing old, staying young, and knowing where and who we are. It's about what we have in common and what makes us unique and what we expect from ourselves and from each other.

We’ve added a lot of new features – lots of history, archives of our Dartmouth Alumni Magazine columns, frequent updates about 67 news and events and reports from Class officers.

The best new feature is our state-of-the-art 67 BLOGS. Here you will be able to post news about yourself, read the postings of our classmates and engage in discussions about College, Class and life issues.  67 BLOGS is password protected for security. We have e-mailed passwords to everyone for whom we have addresses. If you do not have yours, use this e-mail address to get yours "Sam Ostrow" ceo@ostrow-partners.com or "Krisa Verbitsky" krisa@bluechipfilms.com.

67, this is your website.  It will grow with you, and with us. We welcome your thoughts and suggestions. Let us know how we are doing, every time you come Home.

67' NEWS

Executive Committee Meeting - November 17, 2012 Minutes

Twenty members of the Class of 67 Executive Committee met on November 17. Among the topics discussed were the 45th and 50th Reunions, the upcoming New York City Mini-Reunion as well as the 2012 Boston, Rhode Island and Washington mini-reunions, the Class Treasury, Class Dues, Class Projects and other important issues. The minutes of the meeting may be found by clicking the link here or going to the From the President Page.

45th Reunion – October 11 – 14, 2012

The Great Class has spoken and the vote was overwhelming for the Dartmouth tradition 67 truly started – an October Reunion! Our 45th will be held in the Hanover area on October 11-14 2012. The theme is “Target 50th – Be healthy and happy until 67’s 50th and beyond.”

We’ll have three great dinners in some of the Upper Valley’s neatest venues, talks with professors on subjects ranging from diet and nutrition to exercise to financial planning to “finding your next thing.” There will be tours of the new Dartmouth facilities, a football game with the traditional 67 tent, planning discussions for the 50th and, as always, more time for enjoying each other than planned events. We won’t have dorm rooms, of course, so you are on your own for lodging – although we are working on getting a small block of rooms at a local hotel. We will get you a list of the available locations with a range of prices in the near future. Many details are still to be worked out – so follow this space and the Class Newsletter for information and details.

Alumni Council Report Fall 2011:

Just back from Hanover and the Alumni Council meeting which occurred over December 1 – 3. John Manaras, as a former councilor, also attended the entire meeting. The summary which follows will appear in only slightly altered format both in the Class Newsletter (expect a magnum opus from Bob Burka soon in hard copy through the mail) and on the Class website. An “official” summary of the meeting, prepared by Alumni Relations, will be made available, but not for a while. The link to the official summary will appear on the website.

Items covered during the December 1 – 3 Alumni Council meeting included the following:

  • Most importantly, unanimous approval by the Alumni Council of the following three (3) Trustee candidates: Nathaniel “Nate” Fick ’99, Richard H. “Rick” Kimball ’78 and Ben Wilson ’73. You can find details about each on the Vox the Vote website at http://voxthevote.org/;
  • Briefing on the status of the Strategic Planning process currently underway and dominating the thinking of many of the presenters. The Plan will conclude sometime next year, with the promise (announced by President Kim) that the Plan will result in multiple “investment opportunities” (read, new capital campaign). The Strategic Planning process is intended to be inclusive of the entire Dartmouth community, so if you would like to enter your thoughts, please use http://strategicplanning.dartmouth.edu/inform/;
  • College finances have improved after the serious belt tightening which occurred last year, and measured against our peer institutions, the endowment performance was better than most at flat or only slightly down for the year; financial projections include continuing substantial increases in giving to the Dartmouth College Fund;
  • On the topic I had raised in messages prior to this Alumni Council session, Admissions confirmed that for the past couple of years, the College has converted what used to be grants into loans for a part of the aid given to those families having an income of $75K or less, with a response from Maria Laskaris to the “squeeze” incurred by students who now face loans instead of grants that the College is willing to match the financial aid package offered by any other institution – meaning that some of those loans will reconvert to grants to remain competitive;
  • According to both Provost Folt and President Kim, Dartmouth is not perceived by the world at large as having an important place in the international research universe, resulting in an anomalous ranking on that score compared to the way the College is viewed as a liberal arts institution (very high and at least comparable to its peers). Although there is no obsession with rankings, including that of US News and World Report (where Dartmouth has done very well in its category), increasing emphasis is expected by that publication and others upon international “presence” when ranking educational institutions – presenting an image and marketing challenge for Dartmouth;
  • Discussions among the consortium of schools which are addressing high risk drinking continues to bear fruit;
  • Dean Charlotte Jackson admitted having her hands full with too many students being assigned to too few faculty advisors to run an effective academic counseling program, so changes are afoot there, as well as in the area of career counseling;
  • According to the AD, Harry Sheehy, the Dartmouth Peak Performance Program, now in beta mode, will be trotted out to all varsity athletes by this fall, allowing for continuous monitoring of the hesalth and training status of each athlete. The key take away from this session was to drink chocolate milk after working out; and
  • The first class is enrolled in the Dartmouth Health Care Delivery Science course, taking aim at making our health care system more efficient and effective.

These are, admittedly, “snippets” and meant to prompt engagement. If you have questions or would like to discuss any of these topics or other subjects related to the College, I welcome your contacting me, preferably by email at rkugler@archerlaw.com or, even better, talking to me and the rest of your Classmates through the blog on our Class website! Try it out!

Class of 1942 World War II Memorial Book

In January, we were approached by Leo Caproni of the Great Class of 1942 about his Class’s project to create a book memorializing their participation in World War II, with letters, photographs, transcribed oral histories and other mementoes. When we sent out a note to 67’s, John Manaras let us know that he had been working with the Class of 42 on the legal issues, and he knew how much a donation from 67 would do to allow them to complete the project. With two weeks, we raised over $2,700, which Leo let us – and the College – know made completion of the project possible. He sent us the following note: “There is probably no adequate way to thank an individual or a group of classmates for their combined interest and loyalty shown by the Class of 67’s generous gift of $2725 to our WWII Project. However, we want all of you to know the entire living members and widows of our class of 1942 are deeply indebted to the unselfish assistance you have made to our project. “ At a Dartmouth dinner in New York in April, Sam Ostrow and Rich Paolino visited with Leo and his wife, who told us “it would not have happened without ‘67” with tears in their eyes. Brought tears to us as well. If you would like to contribute to this project (and all of our parents were of that era as well), please send a check payable to Dartmouth Class of 1967 for any amount, marked Class of 1942 project, to Rick Geissinger, ’67 Treasurer, c/o American General Finance,  601 NW 2d Street, Evansville, IN 47708
