DARTMOUTH CLASS OF 1966 MINIREUNION
MOOSILAUKE HIKING TRIP AUGUST 2-4, 2002
Our class has had several successful mini reunions in addition to our annual homecoming mini reunion in Hanover each fall. Just prior to our 35th Reunion last June, a group of about 20 classmates and family members took advantage of an option to stay overnight at the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge, operated by current Dartmouth Outing Club members. New Hampshire-based classmate Doug Hill led a large group on a hike up and around Mt. Moosilauke. The entire experience was a great success. Building on that, and our successful Connecticut River canoe trip mini reunion in August 2000, participants at our annual meeting at Homecoming in October 2001 asked us to organize a hiking trip for this summer. After consulting with the Dartmouth Outdoor Program staff, we have put together a hiking trip centered on the Moosilauke Ravine Lodge.
We invite you to join us from Friday, August 2 through Sunday, August 4 at Mt. Moosilauke, located 50 miles north of Hanover. We have tentatively reserved 15 slots for meals and lodging for Friday and Saturday nights. The DOC student staff provides hearty breakfasts and dinners. The accommodations include 5 rooms in the main lodge (sleeping from 2-6 people) and bunkhouses which sleep 4 to 12 people. Hot showers are available in the main lodge. The total capacity is 94, so if we have more than 15 sign up, we likely will be able to accommodate everyone. The cost including breakfast, dinner and your bunk is $40 if you stay in the lodge and $36 if you are in a bunkhouse. With advance notice they can also put together a bag lunch for an additional charge of $4.50. Area hiking maps will be available. Alcoholic beverages are not served, but are allowed (BYO). A refrigerator is available for beverages and lunches. Visit www.dartmouth.edu/~opo/moosilauke for more info. Other hikes ranging from easy 2 hour to strenuous 8-10 hour hikes are accessible in the nearby Franconia Notch area (about a half hour drive). Bretton Woods and access to Mt. Washington (hiking, cog railway) is about 45 miles or 1 hour from our base. You may want to join classmates in hiking Moosilauke one day, and taking on hikes in Franconia on the other day.
We have selected this weekend in August as the remaining weekends in August are booked for special events, and then freshman trips take over in September. You may want to combine this weekend with other activities. For those interested, we will organize a golf outing at newly redesigned Hanover Country Club on August 1. For hikers, there is the Appalachian Mountain Club hut system. The AMC huts are popular, and reservations for the 8 huts can be difficult to secure. The cost is $69 per night (dinner, bunk, breakfast). For reservations, call 603-466-2727 or visit www.outdoors.org and click hutflash. For those who want to be pampered, there is the Mt. Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods. This large, renovated “grand” hotel has a golf course, easy access to the Cog Railway and great views. Reservations—603-278-1000.
To sign up, please complete the form below and return with your check to Al Keiller by July 8 (sooner, to help ensure a spot for you as the DOC opens reservations to the general public on April 1). We will contact those who sign up to coordinate the August 1 golf, meeting times at Moosilauke, evening entertainment, etc.
