	We were saddened to learn of the death of our classmate, Stephen C. Kennedy, M.D., in a bicycle accident on April 3, 2004. A plastic surgeon practicing in Vancouver, Washington, since 1979, Steve was in Maine visiting his son. The accident occurred while the two were riding bicycles in Acadia National Park (For a newpaper account go here.) Steve is survived by his wife of 15 years, Jan Newby Kennedy, three children, two stepchildren and six grandchildren. We extend to them our heartfelt condolences. 	Steve and Jan, Seattle, WA in 1999 Class President John Walters wrote Jan the following letter:
Steve and youngest grandchild, Fionna Kennedy, age 6 months in 2001

Dear Jan,

Dartmouth's Alumni Relations Office has just notified us about Steve's tragic accident, which has shocked and saddened the Class of 1962. On behalf of the Class, I wanted to add our collective condolences.

Dan Tompkins, our Class webmaster, and an avid biker himself, remembered Steve as a "wonderfully friendly and upbeat" guy. After receiving a Class of '62 email from Dan regarding Steve, Bill Carpenter, who lives near Acadia National Park, wrote: "This was known as a bizarre and inexplicable accident occurring only a few miles from my office here in Bar Harbor. Until this email I had no idea that the victim was the same Steve Kennedy who was with us at Dartmouth. I am stunned and saddened, especially at being so near the scene and not knowing who it was till now." I'm sure we will be hearing many similar sentiments regarding Steve. We all will miss him.

As is the established practice of the Class of 1962, a book will be purchased and presented to Baker Library in Steve's memory. He will not be forgotten.

Jan Kennedy's reply.

Thank you so much for all the kind words about Steve that have swirled in technology since his death just 4 months ago today. I am still in utter disbelief about it all. Fortunately, or unfortunaately, when someone dies in the middle of his very active life, there is MUCH to do including getting a medical practice sold, which I was able to do within 30 days. Our many many dear friends have all been so kind and helpful to me in so many matters. Our church has been a real expression of God's care, too.

I find that I have way more on my plate than I can handle at the usual pace. My emotional stamina is obviously not up to par and my duties include so many things that I never even planned or wanted to do, especially estate matters. So with the number of urgent duties greater than ever, and half as many persons to do them, it takes at least twice as long.

Many of you very likely had our old address in Vancouver where we lived for many years. It was two years ago that we moved to our new place and forwarding service functions for only one year. A major portion of my time these last months has been occupied with the finishing of our new home on the Washougal River - Steve's dream and passion (besides me, of course!).

Again, thank you all for your concern and your efforts to send yourcondolences. Steve was a marvelous, kind and compassionate person. I loved him deeply and he taught me much.

I am duly impressed with the Dartmouth "club" and am just quite sorry that I was a bit unaware of such good "club care" while he was alive. Your collective efforts warm my broken heart.
