THOMAS D. SAYLES, JR.

died on May 15, 2004. Tom entered Dartmouth from Governor Dummer Academy. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta, Dragon and a member of the golf team. After graduation, Tom joined the training program at the Hanover Bank. A three year stint with the USAF interrupted his banking career. In 1958, he joined Manufacturer's Hanover Trust serving as a junior loan officer branch manager and senior officer. In 1961, he received an MBA from NYU. In 1970, Tom joined the Summit Bank in Summit, eventually becoming president, chief executive officer and chairman. He retired in 1994, but continued to serve on the boards of numerous corporations.

Tom's public service included serving as chairman of the board of the Summit Speech School. Chairman of the Gateways to the Future campaign for Drew University, trustee of Overlook Hospital, director of the Urban League of Union County, trustee and chairman of the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts. He also served the Advisory Council of Junior Achievement, the National Conference for Community and Justice, the Summit Area Public Foundation and the Independent College Fund of New Jersey.

To say he was an avid golfer is an understatement.

Tom was revered by his classmates and friends. "He got it right."

He is survived by his wife, Patricia, his sons, Rick and Stephen and his daughter, Lynn.
