JUNE  2003

TAKE HEED ....... please

Alas and Alack! (and possibly Woe!) After nine years of editing tis cleverly named newsletter, it has become abundantly clear to me that its effectiveness as a means of commuicating important Class business has waned. The first half of 2003 has been a miasma of missed/lost/ignored requests for 50th Book submissions, lost addresses, slow pickup on obtaining reunion lodging and stone-walling me on requests for email addresses, much less stiffing HARRY ROBINSON on Class dues. Of course, the fact that the entire Class is now muddling around in the early stages of its eighth decade may be a contributing factor. The capper was one of our vaunted holders of a Phi Beta Kappa key  who was unable to determine the year of our 50th reunion! At any rate, there are at least 1000 of you readers (including spouses and POSSLQs) out there and it is, indeed, important that you pay attention for at least the next 12 months. Thanks - ‘preciate it.

Number One With A Bullet! is submitting your 50th Book write-up to BILL WHITE and WAYNE WEIL. At this writing, only a paltry 40 submissions have been received. This is a monumental task for our dynamic duo, albeit a labor of love, and each one of us is capable of easing the schedule strain by taking the time now to chronicle the last twenty-five years of our lives. If you can’t locate any of the several copies of Bill’s instructional letter, email or phone me and I’ll whip one on you. When you dig out Reflections, you will undoubtedly spend some time perusing it. Let the good vibrations that flow from the memories and chuckles guide your hands and granite-filled brains to the task at hand.

The ‘54 Chicago Weekend, hosted by the MULLINS and the TYLERS, has attracted a sizable group of Classmates - over 30 couples at last count!  Steve has asked that the date change be underlined.  The  affair is now scheduled  for September 11th to the 15th. The change was necessitated by a last-minute shift in the date for a College meeting which will draw several Classmates to Hanover. There is still room for more attendees - contact Steve at 70 East Lake St., Suite 620, Chicago, IL 60601, (312) 553-1122 or Steve.Mullins@mindspring.com .  A super opportunity to get acquainted with the hub of the Midwest in the company of friends and with the guidance and hospitality of two fine hosts.  In a related note, Tom is now wrestling with some intestinal polyps but reports that chemo has been quite effective and that he fully plans on hosting in September and skiing with his regular vigor next winter. Drop him a line.

A companion piece to the 50th Book will be a Class Directory - names, addresses and the multiple ways in which to contact you. This data should be included with your submissions to Bill/Wayne.  Cutting out a piece of this project, your newsletter editor has taken on the task of assembling a current list of email addresses for the 600+ of you out there. So far, it has proven to be both fascinating and challenging. Stage One has involved those who belonged to a fraternity while on campus. Relying on The Aegis for house membership and at least four separate lists for addresses, those with known addresses have been contacted for confirmation. Several observations: (1) at least one-quarter of the addresses are wrong or obsolete, (2) an unexpected plus - guys are talking to old buddies from College years, (3) another gratifying plus - volunteers are popping up all over the place and exhorting brothers to respond - DON SWANSON, NED JARRETT, JIM LOVE, TONY LUKEMAN, DON KELLER, NAT BUGBEE, PETE KENYON, DICK PEARL, RIP COFFIN, RICK HARTMAN, ED WINNICK, JOHN FENN, TOMMY THOMPSON, DICK BARKER, MIKE BIGGS, STAN ROSENBERG. Additionally, addresses change constantly, so it is a movable feast. For those ‘54s known to have email, the up-dating is being done by telephone. For the others (fraternities only), names are listed below by house. Please either email me your address or notify me that you don’t have one on the enclosed Green card. As you know, JOE MESICS leads a cult that holds that email is the work of the Devil and designed to  eliminate human communication. I have come to appreciate this position as I contact ‘54s by both email and phone. The missing human element of  real voices certainly dilutes the experience. Additional note - it is almost eerie to recognize voices from decades ago with the full knowledge that the aging process has changed the entities speaking with them. So take a look:

The data above is flawed, almost by definition, so please inject any and all information you have. Stage Two will involve the “independents” - those who were not members of fraternities. This process will be done alphabetically, having rejected color of eyes, height and geography.  Expect a number of “test” emails in your mailboxes.

 Reunion

While our “official” 50th reunion is scheduled for Friday, June 11th through graduation and Hamburgers at Heston’s on Sunday, June 13th, extensions on either side of this timeframe are being investigated and, in the case of the post-graduation weekend, implemented (see Basin Harbor letter, next.) The classes before us have found strong interest and attendance at such extensions, so, in addition to the Basin Harbor hoorah, your reunionators are giving serious consideration to an optional opening blast on Thursday evening, thus opening up more leisure time for reliving memories and rekindling old friendships.  All the attendant  arrangements will be considered and reported to you in the next newsletter.

In the spirit with which we took on the North woods in 1950, the tradition of a pre-reunion trek up Moosilauke will be continued under the more than capable leadership of Rev. DAVE RANSOM. Likely a Friday morning event, permitting the chubbers to arrive at the registration desk hairy, grimy and disdainful of us who preferred the comfort of the first keg in the tent.

Fred Haas ‘73 is already booked to provide superb music at times when we need it. We are working on attracting the ‘51-’54 musicians who supplemented and enlivened Fred’s work at the 45th - MIKE BIGGS, RON DUNTON, MIKE PAYSON, plus a good number of older fellas from the early 50’s. Mike Payson will be drumming at ‘53’s 50th this June.

At the 2003 graduation, Fred Whittemore and Bob Henderson, Class of 1953 will receive honorary degrees. Several ‘54s have been proposed for the honor in 2004 and the decision is now up to a committee of  faculty members, College administration and an alumni committee. Remember the celebrity honorees at our graduation? Alfred Lunt and Lynne Fontanne.

In the list of possible lodgings for reunion, there were two errors. For the Alden Country Inn, the last digit was omitted from the telephone number (about which I was tweaked by DON AUSTERMANN). The correct number is 603/795-2222. The Jackson House Inn (Woodstock) notified me that their business phone is 802/457-2065 and toll-free is 800/448-1890.  Since they took the time to correct the number, they may still have rooms available.

DICK PAGE will soon be launching the “public” phase of the campaign to raise the Class’s gift to the College at our reunion. Since very few of us are still actively working, it was acknowledged at Homecoming that the gift will not come from current income, but from the capital that each of has accumulated and, therefore “from each according to his means.” A ‘54 committee has been in discussions with those most blessed for several months and now the entire Class will be involved in the campaign.

Lastly, a generous group of Classmates have stepped up to the plate and committed to subsidization of the 50th Book. Over the last five decades, we have benefited from  the strong support of ‘54s who have shared their success us from the dynamic camaraderie  born of the common experience in Hanover.  Our thanks go out to these men in addition to the corps of other “volunteers” who keep the ‘54 fires burning.

Now read the imaginative writings of PETER KENYON, describing what appears to be a voyage into euphoria, even though it is really a promo piece for post-reunion joy.

 ‘54 Doings

DON KENNEDY once again exploded into the Letters to the Editor column of The Alumni Magazine. He took issue with a professor’s article about Iraq which leaned perceptibly to the left. “If you allow the bullies to get their way, they’ll destroy you every time!” More of us should  express ourselves in the DAM. Let’em know we’re out here!

The ‘54 skiers took Aspen and Vail by storm in early March. Enjoying perfect weather in both venues were: CLIFF EVANS, NED FREEDMAN, DICK GORSEY, BILL MURANE, STEVE MULLINS, ART RAUCH, TOM TYLER and JAY DAVIS (the organizer). As a delightful plus, Father GEORGE FITZGERALD joined the group for a lively evening from his Minturn, CO location. Jay claims 25 miles of vertical descent. Cliff reported that his slope damaged knee went right back to normal when he returned to the tennis courts.

Dr. DAVE LEVINE has just been named Director of Alumni Relations for the Hospital for Special Surgery, an institution at which he practiced his craft for many years. Dave has been honored by having an annual spine lecture established in his name. A number of ‘54s sought his counsel when their parts began to wear out. The good doctor and JANET  have both a New York apartment and a farm, some 2 hours distant. Best of both worlds.

BILL PIERCE chimed in from Vista, CA where he remarried a while back, increasing the kid-count from four to nine!

JACK BUFFINGTON eschews the smelling of the roses and continues to work in the agricultural equipment business, interrupted more and more by tennis.

After fifty years of harassment by Chi Phi brother BOB BERRY, KEN ZWIENER has finally relented and will join us in Hanover in 2004. Will the miracles never cease?

TED NOVASCONE triumphantly boasts of the spoils of his attention to being the early bird. He has a room at the Hanover Inn for reunion (called at 4 am on January 1). Fed-exed his deposit to DON BERLIN for the Dalmatian Coast cruise (late September 2004) and was emailed back that  21 of 25 slots were already filled. He and SANDI will Windstar cruise from Venice to Rome this coming September. And, ever vigilant, Ted recommends the website for Basin Harbor (basinharbor.com) for their spin, versus that of Kenyon/Hillman.

Doctor BILL COHN, was dragged, both kicking and screaming into cyberworld by his daughter and her husband - WMCOHN@aol.com.

GEORGE KINGSLEY has survived an infected rotator cuff on which he was blaming a diminished golf game. The 50th is questionable due to its coincidence with a BIG anniversary. Sounds like an opportunity for a two-fer, GINNY willing!

KATHY FAST has that delightful style of printing that is reminiscent of the postal communications with beautiful college women back in the 50s. She and STEVE will be at both the Chicago event and the 50th. “We did not get eaten by the Papua, New Guinea ‘mudmen’, although we are missing body parts here & there. Actually, they are delightful! It was very enjoyable to spend time with them and they were genuinely pleased that we went to see them. Our grandchildren would have been terrified!” Her request for the recipe for Old Maude’s Juice has been forwarded to CLARK and DONNA DAVIS - “I want to keep Mr. Fast happy in his retirement now that he does most of the cooking and plans cruises here and there around the world to make me happy!”

RED GRUNDMAN asks about Classmates bringing their large dogs to reunions. He and MARY ELLEN can’t stand to be parted with their retriever (standard poodle) and are vacillating between finding a Hanover area kennel and just letting their friend loose among those hounds of Hanover. Wonder if the ambience of ‘04-related canines blends with that of ‘54 tolerators?

Adopted Classmate CARRIE PELZEL, Vice President for Development, has been seen and heard by the Class in many aspects lately. A recent Horizons program on campus, under her direction, lured BOB and JEAN ADNOPOZ, LUKE and ANN CASE, JOHN and SUSIE FREUND, JOHN and BETTY HESTON, JERRY and DOROTHY GOLDSTEIN, HERB and ANN HILLMAN and TED and PAT SHORT. The attendees were treated to thorough presentations relative to the Hood Museum, the Baker-Berry Library, Dartmouth’s finances, admissions, athletics, the Rockefeller Center, the Tucker Foundation and a sum-up by President Jim Wright. A dazzling two days! Then, her mailing of the 2003 Carnival program was a memory-stirrer of one of Dartmouth’s distinctive celebrations of its “place.”

While toiling in the 50th Book trenches, BILL WHITE was interrupted by JANE to learn that his grandchild cup runneth over! Henry William White, a hefty 9 pound 12 ounce bruiser, arrived in late April.

On receipt of announcements of my upcoming performances in Off-Off-Off-Broadway plays, JOHN CUNNINGHAM generally comes up with rather transparent reasons for not attending - anticipating gout attack, dinner with the Husseins, etc. But this time, it was a big one - going to Toronto to portray Donald Rumsfeld in a film - sounds plausible.

JIM LOVE passes on a wonderful story about the GARLANDs. BILL is in the process of retiring from his law practice in Bradenton, FL, now working only several afternoons a week. DOT is slowly phasing out of the exotic bird business at the same time. With the freed-up time, they have expanded their work with troubled kids at their farm in Palmetto. Hard to think of a more unselfish and admirable pursuit. Hope to hear from the Garlands about their activities.

JIM RILL is traveling the world as co-chair of Howrey Simon Arnold & White’s anti-trust section our of Washington. The firm is the world’s preeminent intellectual property practice.

The fourth annual ‘54 Golf Classic was an unqualified success, drawing back the regulars and attracting several new Classmates. A total of 21 Classmates and 18 spouses enjoyed three days of perfect Florida weather on three different golf courses. RICK and ANNE HARTMAN manned the Presidential Suite (and slept in it) while TOM and LIZ KELSEY handled the details of the when and where of golf. In addition to the leaders, ‘54s included: DON and BARBARA BERLIN, BOB and FAY BERRY, DAVE and MARIE DAME, RON and CAROLE DOUGHERTY, MORT and JUDY GALPER, BILL and DOT GARLAND, ALEC and MARY GREY, YNGVAR HVISTENDAHL, DON and JOIE KELLER, DICK and AUDREY LEWIS, BOB and PATTY OSMOND, FRED and MIMI PAGE, JOHN and GINNY POPE, HARRY and CAROL ROBINSON, PETE SCHENCK, JIM and JOAN TOFIAS, WIL and ZELDA WILKINS and GARY ZWART. Dinners and cocktails abounded, as did interminable golf stories. TAKE HEED - the Fifth Annual ‘54 Golf Classic will be held February 22nd through the 25th, again at the plantation Inn in Florida. The Tofias’s will handle the social events and “Long Ball” Berry will preside over the golf.

The many different Classmates that take on the responsibility for organizing and running ‘54 gatherings deserve our thanks and participation. The Class was recognized at last year’s Class Officers’ meeting as preeminent in producing “connecting” events - golf, fishing, skiing, cruises, historic site visits, communal birthday, holiday lunches and mini-reunions. if you are not enjoying even one of these thoroughly magnificent happenings, it’s time to join in! Put 50th reunion on top of the list.

BILL GROVER continues to enjoy girdling the earth via his role as a gentleman dance host. In December, it was a Caribbean trip from San Juan. Then a 2-week sojourn from San Jose through the Panama Canal to Fort Lauderdale. In early May, out of Rome to roam the Mediterranean, hitting Barcelona, Majorca, the Riviera, Florence, Santorini and Athens. Additionally, he meets cruise ships in the Boston Harbor and conducts tours of the city. This amazing Classmate just completed a stint as Department Chaplain in the State Reserve officers’ Association.

BOB and BARBARA LEVINE and STEVE and CAROL MULLINS took a 17-day tour of Antarctica. 100 passengers. They visited the Falkland Islands, South Georgia Island, the South Orkney Islands, Elephant Island, the Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. 23 Zodiac (inflated power boat) landings! “We visited 1 million penguins - 7 different species, 5 species of seals and 3 kinds of whales. We tramped the nesting grounds of the King, Rock-Hopper, Chin-Strap, Gentoo, Adelie, Magellanic and Macaroni penguins.” Temperatures reached the 50s and they swam in the spring-warmed waters off Deception Island. It was the Mullins’ seventh continent. Lots of hiking. Highly recommended by both couples.

 In Memoriam

BARRY LEVIN died December 2 in Wayland, MA of pancreatic cancer. “Bright, fun-loving guy” is the memory his Pi Lam brothers hold of him. He got  a law degree after Naval service and practiced in Boston. For the last 10 years he had been in business with his son, Gregg, developing innovative products. Prior to our 25th reunion, he made a substantial capital gift to Dartmouth. He leaves his wife, Jill, two sons , a daughter and four grandchildren. We are diminished.
